I don’t actually want to continue fighting with people on tumblr or at all. I’m not hating on people’s art nor am I trying to bash people. I’m just upset because my friend is being targeted, someone I care about very much. I feel that people should try communicating instead of anonymously trying to hurt someone, and how they make a living via the web. I know for a fact that all the people that have been posting negative rants about fan artists, or professional artists, or original artists, (or whatever the fuck you want to label yourself as,) that I have never heard anything negative come from WTFCharms mouth about any of the Artist Alley artists.

It’s true she’s more business minded, not because she’s rude, or trying to be an ass, because it’s how she puts food in her mouth!! It’s a great luxury to be able to go to a con and be totally laid back about what you sell or for how much. Local Idaho cons are especially easy to do that, as the tables are cheap and everyone knows each other.

But if you want to get to the big cons, ECCC, or Anime Evolution, Dragon con, SDCC, etc, then it makes sense to be more business minded about it. You have to be able to make enough to cover your badge, table, travel, food, and hotel for it to be worth it at all. Then make a profit to continue restocking your inventory. If you want to go to a con for fun then you have entertainment money put aside for it. Others can’t afford it or choose to attempt to make a living via cons, and/or the internet.

As for her not admitting to gaining inspiration from other clay artists, that’s complete and utter bullshit, I remember when she started; how cool and cute and amazing she thought other clay charms were. She did her best not to copy, however a lot of the things in artist alley are fan art and are what people want. So yes there are some copies. But when she started making Mario charms, Zelda charms, etc she was very conscious of making them look different. Also she continues to change the way she makes her charms and improve upon them. She’s also beginning to make 100% original jewelery.

I always tell kids that are just starting to draw and express themselves creatively that it’s okay to trace and copy (so long as you never claim it as your own) because that’s how you learn, then you evolve and develop your own style, and that’s what WTFCharms has done.

I don’t appreciate the negative comments directed towards WTFCharms but ESPECIALLY towards the person behind WTFCharms. It’s petty, mean, and completely uncalled for especially in a professional community. Stop for a second and think of how you may be affecting this person’s life, do they do this for fun? do they do it to make money? why do they need to make money? maybe because it’s their livelihood.

This all being said I am done ranting and raving. I have done what I felt was necessary to defend someone dear to me.
